Go Green Family Camping promotes conservation of countryside
Saturday, November 25, 2017

Jointly organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Scout Association of Hong Kong, Go Green Family Camping is being held today and tomorrow (November 25 to 26) at the West Dam of High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung East Country Park to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the country parks and promote conservation of the countryside. Go Green Family Camping is also one of the celebration activities for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Under the theme of environmentally friendly camping, Go Green Family Camping aims to foster the public's positive attitude and habits in cherishing the countryside through outdoor family activities. The activity has attracted more than 900 participants, including families who successfully enrolled via website registration, and children who had been arranged to join the event by the Children and Youth Integrated Services Centres of the Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong. Activities include a night show, game booths and visits to the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

Officiating at the night show, the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, said that citizens can protect the precious countryside of Hong Kong together while enjoying the fun of outdoor activities in country parks. He urged the public to take action by using fewer disposable items and bringing their own reusable utensils, reducing waste at source and taking their litter home to keep the environment clean.

The event location has been designated as a campsite for today and tomorrow by the AFCD for this event for the participants to carry out camping activities. Most of the camping equipment, meals and transportation have been arranged by the organiser. The equipment was rented from suppliers and will be reused to achieve waste reduction at source. Drinking water refilling stations have been set up on-site and no bottled drinks are being provided. Food waste is being collected for further processing. These measures are intended to reduce waste as much as possible and put the concept of "leave no trace" in the countryside into action.

The AFCD has been organising a variety of interesting celebration events since April 2017. These include Excursion with Experts, the Plantation Enrichment Project, Trail Maintenance Workshop, the "Trees Are Good" Fun Day, "Joy" Us Hiking, Tai Tong Fun Carnival, roving exhibitions and seminars. These events provide opportunities for the public to learn more about and conserve the countryside by sharing the responsibility of protecting the country parks, with a view to passing the precious natural environment of Hong Kong on to future generations.
